Foster Care Program
Foster care provides children with a stable, nurturing home when they are unable to live with their families for a period of time.
At Jumto, foster care is about more than providing a temporary home. It is about creating meaningful relationships that help children experience safety, belonging, and stability while supporting their ongoing connections to family, culture, language, and community whenever possible.
Children in care come from diverse backgrounds and experiences. Each child brings unique strengths, interests, dreams, and stories. Our role is to honour those strengths while ensuring children receive compassionate care that supports their emotional, physical, mental, social, spiritual, and cultural well-being.
Foster caregivers are an important part of a child’s circle of care that create an environment where children feel respected, understood, and empowered to thrive.
Who Can Become a Foster Caregiver?
Anyone 19 years or older who wants to care for a child or youth can apply. Single people, couples, and families of all constellations and backgrounds with or without their own children may apply to become foster caregivers. We welcome Indigenous Peoples, visible minorities, persons with disabilities, and others who may contribute to diversity in the availability of foster homes.
It is not necessary to own a home or be a stay-at-home parent. What matters most is your willingness to build trusting relationships and provide a nurturing environment where children feel they belong.
Qualifications and Requirements
To become a Foster Caregiver with Jumto, applicants must meet the following requirements:
- Age: Minimum of 19 years of age
- Residency: Resident of British Columbia
- Criminal Record Checks: Completion of criminal record checks for the prospective caregiver(s), anyone 18 years of age or older residing in the home, and anyone 18 years of age and over who has significant and unsupervised time with a child placed in the home
- Home Assessment: A thorough assessment via questionnaires and interviews, including visits to the prospective caregiver’s home and completion of a home study
- Medical Assessment: A medical assessment to ensure the caregiver is medically fit to care for children
- Reference Checks: Three reference checks, including one from a previous employer and one from a relative or extended family member
- First Aid and CPR: First Aid and CPR Level C certification
- Valid BC Driver’s Licence: A valid BC Driver’s Licence and a clear driver’s abstract
- Training: Non-violent Crisis intervention training
- Safe Home Environment: A safe and nurturing home environment with a spare bedroom available
- Cultural Agility: Comfort in providing guidance and supervision that meets a child’s needs and cultural heritage
What Foster Caregivers Do
Foster Care providers are required to perform duties which may include:
- Overseeing medication administration
- Providing personal care
- Meal preparation and grocery shopping
- Activity planning
- Facilitating cultural connections
- Transportation to family visits
- Supporting children and youth with complex intellectual, behavioural, and/or medical needs
Support and Compensation
As a foster caregiver with Jumto, you will receive ongoing guidance and support throughout your caregiving journey. We are committed to walking alongside you, ensuring you have the resources, knowledge, and professional support needed to help children succeed.
- Monthly Maintenance Payment: To cover the direct costs of caring for children and youth
- Additional Payments: Vary with the complexity of care provided, the skills of the caregiver, and the needs of the child or youth
- Comprehensive Training: Including other required training directly related to support needs of the person served
- Ongoing Support: Dedicated support from the Jumto team throughout your journey
Home Share Provider Program
Our Home Share Program offers children the opportunity to live in a supportive family environment where they can develop life skills, build meaningful relationships, and gain the confidence to achieve their personal goals.
Home Share is built on connection, respect, and partnership. As a Home Share provider, you become part of a child’s circle of care by offering a safe, stable, and inclusive home where they are encouraged to grow while remaining connected to their identity, family, culture, language, traditions, and community.
Every Home Share arrangement is unique because every child is unique. We carefully match children with providers who can support their individual strengths, interests, goals, and aspirations while respecting their lived experiences and personal journey.
At Jumto, we believe that children achieve the best outcomes when caregivers are supported by a coordinated network of services. Home Share providers work alongside families, schools, healthcare professionals, social workers, cultural supports, and community partners to ensure children and youth receive holistic, wraparound care that promotes well-being, belonging, and lifelong success.
Who Can Become a Home Share Provider?
We welcome compassionate individuals and families from all backgrounds who are committed to creating homes where children and youth feel accepted, respected, and included. What matters most is your willingness to build positive relationships and help young people grow with confidence and a strong sense of self.
Qualifications and Requirements
To become a Home Share Provider with Jumto, applicants must meet the following requirements:
- Age: Minimum of 19 years of age
- Residency: Resident of British Columbia
- Criminal Record Check: A clear criminal record check
- Home Assessment: Satisfactory home study
- First Aid and CPR: Emergency First Aid and CPR certification
- Valid BC Driver’s Licence: A valid BC Driver’s Licence and a driver’s abstract from ICBC
- Safe Home Environment: A safe and welcoming home environment with a separate room or suite available
- Experience: Experience working with individuals with disabilities or caring for a loved one (preferred but not required)
- Interpersonal Skills: Strong interpersonal and communication skills
- Training: Willingness to complete training and meet contract requirements
What Home Share Providers Do
Home Share providers:
- Assist individuals with their everyday lives in a holistic manner within their own home
- Work individually and as part of a multi-disciplinary team of professionals
- Provide a safe, stable, and caring home for children and youth
- Support individuals with mental health, addictions, brain injuries, and/or physical, intellectual, and medical healthcare needs
- Create a safe, welcoming, and supportive home environment
Support and Compensation
As a Home Share provider, you will receive:
- Comprehensive Training: Ongoing training and professional development
- Dedicated Support: Ongoing guidance and dedicated support from the Jumto team throughout your journey
- Contract Position: This is a contracted position with competitive compensation
